Dr. Ismail Selim, Director of the Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (“CRCICA”) was appointed Secretary Treasurer of the International Federation of Commercial Arbitration Institutions (“IFCAI”), by virtue of a decision of the IFCAI’s general assembly held at the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (“HKIAC”) on 16 October 2017 during the Hong Kong Arbitration Week. The General Assembly was attended by representatives of 14 arbitral institutions worldwide including the ICC International Court of Arbitration, the HKIAC, the Centre for Arbitration and Mediation at the Brazil-Canada Chamber of Commerce in Sao Paulo, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, the Arbitration Institution of the Finland Chamber of Commerce), the KCAB, the SCAI and the SCC.
The IFCAI was established in 1985 and consists of 52 member organizations worldwide. The federation promotes good relations and information-sharing between commercial arbitration institutions and encourages responsible use of dispute resolution techniques.
Since the inception of the IFCAI, the collaboration between the CRCICA and the IFCAI took place in 1986 when the late Dr. Mohamed I.M. Aboul-Enein, who served as 2nd Director of the CRCICA, was elected as Vice-President of the Federation. Furthermore, Dr. Aboul-Enein was elected as chairman of the IFCAI Institutional Section. In 1992, IFCAI held its first arbitration conference in Cairo “The First Congress of International Federation of Commercial Arbitration Institutions” hosted by the CRCICA. Finally, Dr. Mohamed Abdel Raouf the former Director of the CRCICA was once elected as the Vice President of the federation.
