Dr. Amr A. Abbas, FCIArb
Dr. Abbas is a Partner and heads Matouk Bassiouny & Hennawy Firmβs regional arbitration and competition practices. Over the last 24 years, he represented clients in more than 90 arbitration cases under the laws of several jurisdictions including Abu Dhabi, Algeria, Dubai, Egypt, France, Germany, Lebanon, Malysia, Qatar, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom and the United States before ADCCAC, CAS, CRCICA, DIAC, DIFC-LCIA, LCIA, ICC, ICSID, PCA as well as in ad hoc arbitrations. Dr. Abbas has acted as an arbitrator, sole arbitrator, and chairperson in several arbitrations, as well as an expert in investment arbitration and commercial arbitration in CRCICA, ADCCAC, ICC, DIAC and PCA proceedings. Dr Abbas acts also as a senior expert with the World Bank on competition and regulatory matters in the region.
Previously, he worked at White & Case LLP, The World Bank in Washington DC, Sharkawy & Sarhan, Ibrachy & Dermarker in Cairo. He has acted as a legal advisor to the Egyptian Competition Authority.
Dr. Abbas treaches also at Cairo University and is an adjunct professor at the Law & Economic LLM program between Hamburg University and Cairo University.
Dr. Abbas is recognized as a βLeading Individualβ in arbitration by Legal 500 and Chamber and Partners. He was also recognized in the Arbitration Power List: Africa by Legal 500 (2021 and 2022) as well as Who’s Who Legal: Arbitration 2023-2024.Β He is a fellow member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and member of the ICC Commission.
Dr. Abbas received his LLB with distinguished honors from the Faculty of Law Cairo University (English Section), an LLM from Cairo University, an LLM from the George Washington University School of Law, and a Ph.D. from the University of London, Queen Mary Center for Commercial Law Studies.
