Board of Trustees (BoT)

CRCICA has a Board of Trustees (BoT) consisting of ten (10) members at least and thirty (30) members at the most appointed in consultation with AALCO from amongst eminent African and Asian personalities specialized in the fields of international arbitration, law, business, trade, investment and international relations.

The BoT may include up to 20% of its members from outside the Afro-Asian Region from amongst figures specialized in the aforementioned fields. CRCICA’s current Board of Trustees is composed of 23 members chaired by Dr. Nabil Elaraby and will include two vice-chairmen yet to be elected and 21 other eminent members from Bahrain, Cameroon, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Kuwait, Lebanon, Nigeria, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, United Arab Emirates.

The term of the BoT is four years, which may be renewed once for a similar term, unless otherwise determined due to special circumstances. The BoT carries out the functions provided for in the By-laws of the Board of Trustees. This includes meeting once a year to oversee CRCICA’s caseload and in particular the following functions:

  1. Appointing the Director of the Centre in consultation with AALCO for a four-year term, which may be renewed once for a similar term, unless otherwise determined due to special circumstances;
  2.  Setting down the general policy for achieving the objectives of the Centre; and
  3. Ratifying the Auditor’s report for each fiscal year.

Prof. Bernardo M. Cremades

Bernardo M. Cremades is senior partner of the Spanish law firm, B. Cremades y Asociados, a Professor of Law and a member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation.

Mr. Cremades’ practice is focused on international commercial arbitration and transnational investment disputes. He has acted as counsel, party-appointed arbitrator and president of arbitral tribunals in more than 370 arbitrations. His professional experience in the field of arbitration includes acting in proceedings under the auspices of all major international arbitration institutions, including the ICC, ICSID, AAA, CRCICA or LCIA as well as “ad hoc” arbitrations. He has particular experience in disputes relating to infrastructure, energy, and the regulation of foreign investment.

Mr. Cremades is the leading Spanish international arbitration practitioner (“number one practitioner in Spain for commercial arbitration legal expertise” and “one of the top names in the industry”, Who’s Who legal). In 2018 he was named by Chambers as the best arbitration lawyer in Spain. Global Arbitration Review included him in 2016 in “Who is the Most Influential Arbitrator in the World?”

His international recognition includes Germany’s distinguished Verdienstkreuz award, and the French distinction of Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite. In Spain, he has been awarded the Isabella the Catholic Cross, the Order of Civil Merit and the Grand Cross of the Order of San Raimundo de Peñafort for his contribution to the development of arbitration.

Mr. Cremades is a member of many professional and international arbitration associations and institutions and is a frequent speaker at conferences around the world.
