CIArb ADR World Tour – The Middle East

On 10 March 2021, Dr. Dalia Hussein, CRCICA’s Deputy Director, participated as speaker at the webinar titled “The Rich Culture of Institutional Arbitration in the Middle East”. The webinar was part of the CIArb YMG World ADR Tour and focused on arbitration institutions located in the Middle East.

The session was moderated by Ms. Sara Koleilat-Aranjo, Partner, Al Tamimi & Company, and included speakers representing arbitration institutions in the region, namely, Mr. Christian P. Alberti, Chief of ADR and General Counsel of the Saudi Center for Commercial Arbitration (SCCA); Mr. Mark Demitry, Deputy Counsel in the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean team of the Secretariat of the ICC; Mr. Pavel Kalev, Case Manager, Dubai International Arbitration Centre and Mr. Robert Stephen, Registrar, DIFC-LCIA Arbitration Centre.

The speakers addressed various questions of the moderator, including: the influence of a safe seat on the development of arbitration institutions, the role of institutions to foster an arbitration-friendly environment, the institutions’ appointment policies and the COVID19 impact on institutional practice. In answering these questions, Dr. Hussein spoke about arbitration in Egypt and the evolving friendly and encouraging position of the Egyptian courts towards arbitration. She focused on CRCICA’s history, caseload and the measures it adopted to face COVID19 and highlighted CRCICA’s policy in making arbitrators’ appointment and its efforts to promote age, gender and geographical diversity. The webinar concluded by general comments from participants who expected a bright future for institutional arbitration in the MENA region.
