The 7th of March 2024 marked a significant milestone as the four partners of a new cooperation came together in Nairobi – Kenya to sign a groundbreaking memorandum of understanding, pushing the joint targets of international visibility and growth of arbitration in Africa.
The Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (CRCICA), the Kigali International Arbitration Centre (KIAC) and the Nairobi Centre for International Arbitration (NCIA) embarked on a unique partnership journey with the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce two years ago. They met three times in Hamburg to carve out the aim of enhancement of international visibility and growth of arbitration in Africa by combining the two branches of rule of law and economics. The MoU covers an array of areas including building awareness and visibility of the three partner arbitral institutions especially in Germany; capacity building and promoting a sustainable pipeline of younger arbitrators as well as strengthening the role of women in Arbitration.
The days before the signing, the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce and the consultants of the project, LawCom.Institute visited KIAC in Kigali and NCIA in Nairobi, CRCICA in Cairo, where they met key stakeholders ranging from government officials, the Judiciary, private sector players, Bar Association and Law Society, foreign development agencies, German foreign representatives, academic institutions, and other key players in order to create awareness for the project but also to seek out collaborations to make the project a success. Believing in their vision this cooperation signifies a collective dedication and commitment to create an environment to foster the development of international arbitration and enhance international business opportunities.
To immediately start the implementation of the MoU the partners concluded the week with a workshop deciding about the next steps.
