On 14 December 2017, the Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC) and the Institute Afrique Monde organized a conference on “The Protection of Foreign Investors in the African Extractive Sector: Challenges and Opportunities for African’s Growth and Development”. The Conference addressed the challenges raised by Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) operations in the African extractive sector and the contribution they can make to Africa’s development. Dr. Selim delivered a speech on “Expropriation” during the third session: The Protection of Public Interest in the African Extractive Sector chaired by Robert Volterra, senior partner, Volterra Fietta LLP. Dr. Selim focused on the conduct of a state and its measures that could be challenged by an investor, the scope of protected rights against expropriation as well as partial expropriation and contractual rights.. Other speakers at the session were Ms. Saadia Bhatty, Attorney at Law GIDE LOYRETTE NOUEL LLP(London), Mr. Thomas Snider, Partner, Head of Arbitration at Al Tamimi & Co, and Prof. Yannick Radi, Professor of Public International Law, University of Louvain (UCL).
