Seminar on: Practicing FIDIC in Civil Law Jurisdictions- Application of Time and Additional Payment Provisions

On 9 January 2019, the CIArb Egypt Branch organized a seminar on “Practicing FIDIC in Civil Law Jurisdictions – Application of Time and Additional Payment Provisions”. The speakers were Eng. Dr. Salwa Fawzy, Contracts and Procurement Associate Director at Mountain View for Development and Real Estate, Member of the CIArb Egypt Branch Committee, and Eng. Dr. Tarek Hamed, Founder/Managing Director of DAR for Engineering Contracts. The Seminar was moderated by Prof. Dr. Mohamed S. Abdel Wahab, Chair of Private International Law Department and Professor of International Arbitration (Cairo University), Founding Partner and Head of International Arbitration, Zulficar & Partners Law Firm; Vice-President, ICC International Court of Arbitration, CIArb Trustee for the Middle East/Indian Sub-Continent Region, and Former Chairman of the CIArb, Egypt Branch.

The Seminar focused on the FIDIC forms of contract as one of the most commonly used standard conditions of contract in international projects and the application of some of their provisions related to time and additional payment in the context of the Civil Law, with special application on the Egyptian Civil Law.

The Seminar provided a brief study of the topic extended in the Book “Practicing FIDIC in Civil Law Jurisdictions – Application of Time and Additional Payment Provisions” by Dr. Salwa Fawzy, Dr. Tarek Hamed, Prof. Dr. Mohamed Abdel Wahab and Professor Dr. Islam El-Adaway, Hurst-McCarthy Professor of Construction Engineering and Management, Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering/Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology.

The Seminar was well attended by about 110 participants from Egypt, Nigeria, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the United States of America. Participants, who participated lively in the discussions, reflected a wide spectrum of expertise and different backgrounds including law, construction, telecommunication, banking, real estate development, medical supplies. Members of the Egyptian judiciary and many Egyptian university professors were also among participants.
