The ultimate goal of the United Nations Charter is to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war through the purposes outlined in Article 1, foremost among them the maintenance of international peace and security, and the necessity this entails to adhere to the principles contained in Article 2. These principles include sovereign equality, the peaceful settlement of disputes, refraining from the threat or use of force, and non-interference in internal affairs. These will be the focus, along with a brief mention of the UN’s role in economic, social, and human rights issues, as these are also among its purposes.

This requires a careful reading of the Charter’s provisions and their subsequent development and interpretation, in addition to the mechanisms for developing international law and their effectiveness.
