The Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (CRCICA) commemorated the passing of the legendary Dr. Nabil Elaraby, Chairman of the Centre’s Board of Trustees, former Director of CRCICA, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, and former Secretary-General of the Arab League, who died on August 26, 2024.
The commemoration event featured a welcome address by H.E. Nabil Fahmy, Chairman of CRCICA’s Board of Trustees & Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, followed by a documentary film about Dr. Elaraby’s life, and speeches by H.E. Amr Moussa, Former Secretary-General of the League of Arab States and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Professor Alain Pellet, Former Member and Chairperson at International Law Commission (UN), and member of CRCICA’s Board of Trustees, who joined online, Professor Dr. Nasser Alkidwa, former foreign minister of the Palestinian Authority and former permanent observer of the Palestinian Mission to the United Nations, who joined online, and Mr. Marwan Elaraby, Partner, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP – Dubai. Dr. Ismail Selim, Director of CRCICA and President of the IFCAI provided closing remarks.
Commemoration event speeches were filled with heartfelt tributes, personal anecdotes, and expressions of deep respect and admiration for Dr. Elaraby. The speakers emphasized his exceptional career, his dedication to public service, and his lasting impact on Egypt, the Arab world, and the international community. Highlighting Dr. Elaraby’s pivotal role in establishing and developing the Centre, emphasizing his commitment to the rule of law. As well as, Dr. Elaraby’s distinguished career, including his contributions to international law, his successful defense of Egypt’s sovereignty over Taba, his service as a judge at the International Court of Justice and the Permanent Court of Arbitration, and his membership in the UN International Law Commission. He was remembered as a visionary leader and expert whose legacy will continue to inspire.
