Honoring a Legacy: A Tribute to Dr. Nabil El-Araby

In a dignified ceremony organized by the Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (CRCICA), distinguished dignitaries, diplomats, legal experts, and arbitration professionals gathered to celebrate the enduring legacy of the late Dr. Nabil El-Araby, a towering figure in international law, diplomacy, and arbitration.

Opening remarks were delivered by H.E. Nabil Fahmy, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chair of the CRCICA Board of Trustees. His address set a tone of deep respect for a man whose contributions enriched global legal and diplomatic communities. He concluded by announcing that the hall hosting the event would be named in Dr. El-Araby’s honor—a fitting tribute to his illustrious career and lasting impact on both CRCICA and the international community.

Heartfelt reflections followed from those who had worked alongside or witnessed Dr. El-Araby’s profound contributions firsthand. Among them were H.E. Amr Moussa, former Secretary-General of the League of Arab States and Egypt’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs; Professor Alain Pellet, former member and Chair of the International Law Commission (UN) and CRCICA Board member; Professor Dr. Nasser Al-Kidwa, former Foreign Minister of the Palestinian Authority and former Permanent Observer of the Palestinian Mission to the United Nations; Judge Dr. Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf, former President of the International Court of Justice and CRCICA Board member; and Dr. Ismail Selim, Director of CRCICA and President of IFCAI. Their tributes underscored Dr. El-Araby’s visionary leadership and enduring influence.

In a particularly moving moment, Mr. Marwan El-Araby, Partner at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP in Dubai, spoke on behalf of the family, sharing intimate reflections that captured his humility and unwavering commitment to justice.

The ceremony concluded with stirring remarks urging all present to carry forward Dr. Nabil El-Araby’s legacy of justice, diplomacy, and steadfast dedication to the rule of law.

Dr. El-Araby’s passing is an immeasurable loss. CRCICA mourns him deeply and remains forever grateful for his contributions, leadership, and vision. His profound influence on international law, arbitration, and diplomacy will continue to serve as a guiding light for generations to come.
