It is with profound sorrow that the Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (CRCICA) mourns the loss of H.E. Dr. Nabil Elaraby, Chairman of the CRCICA Board of Trustees; former Director of CRCICA; former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt; and former Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, who passed away on Monday 26 August 2024.
On behalf of CRCICA and its entire staff, Dr. Ismail Selim , CRCICAโ€™s Director, extends his deepest condolences to Dr. Elarabyโ€™s family, friends, and colleagues. The Centre expresses its heartfelt sympathy and prayers for Dr. Elarabyโ€™s eternal peace.
Dr. Elaraby was instrumental in developing and supporting CRCICAโ€™s mission to reinforce the principle of the rule of law and provide a just and time-efficient resolution of commercial and investment disputes. He was also a paragon of Egyptian Diplomacy and among the eminent jurists of international law, as he made significant contributions to the development of international law principles and rules in international forums.
One of Dr. Elarabyโ€™s most notable achievements was his exceptional role in defending Egyptโ€™s sovereignty over Taba in the border dispute against Israel before international arbitration, which culminated in the return of Taba under Egyptian sovereignty in 1988. His distinguished career in international law also included serving as a judge at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) from 2001 to 2006, participating in the Court’s Advisory Opinion regarding the illegality of the Israeli barrier in the West Bank on 9 July 2004. He was also a member of the United Nations International Law Commission from 1994 to2001 and served as a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague.
We may have lost an Egyptian diplomat of the highest caliber, a pioneer of international law, and a driving force of international arbitration in Egypt and the Arab world, but he remains in our hearts. His legacy as a visionary leader will endure to inspire and lead us: we will always remember him for his noble ethics, humanity, values, professional contributions, and enlightened thoughts.
