The Growing Role of the International and National Judiciary in Dealing with Climate Change

Cairo, 15 January 2025

Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Egypt Branch) had the pleasure of holding a  seminar organized by the branch in cooperation with the Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (CRCICA) about: “The Growing Role of the International and National Judiciary in Dealing with Climate Change” on Wednesday, January 15, 2025

Speaker: Ambassador Wael Abul-Magd, Assistant Foreign Minister for Climate, Environment and Sustainable Development.

Moderator: Ambassador Mohamed Mustafa Kamal, MCiarb, former Assistant Foreign Minister, lawyer and arbitrator.

In the face of the escalating challenges of climate change, the symposium will address the growing legal and judicial role in efforts to address climate change. In the light of the existential threat that climate change poses to humanity, progress to address its negative effects solely on the basis of the existing legal system of the Framework Agreement on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement still falls short of addressing the negative effects of climate change. Therefore, international and national courts have recently increased in an effort to establish and define clearer responsibilities on States, beyond the limited scope of climate change agreements. Hence, the symposium addresses the role of international and national justice in dealing with climate change and discusses the value of legal tools in dealing with this challenge facing humanity.
