On 20 June 2018, the CIArb Cairo Branch Wednesday One Seminar entitled: “The International Court of Justice Advisory Opinion on the Barrier Wall”, was delivered by H.E. Dr. Nabil Elaraby, Chairman of CRCICA Board of Trustees, Former Secretary-General of the League of Arab States and Former Judge at the International Court of Justice. The speech focused on the ICJ Advisory Opinion questioning the legality of the Barrier Wall in the Occupied Palestinian Territory under the rules and principles of international law. The introduction referred to Chapter 6 of the UN convention concerning the peaceful settlement of disputes. The topic was approached in light of the legal framework, the UN responsibility, the contractual obligations, and the law of armed conflicts. The seminar was moderated by Prof. Dr. Mohamed S. Abdel Wahab, the President of the CIArb Cairo Branch at that time, Chair of Private International Law Department and Professor of International Arbitration (Cairo University), Founding Partner and Head of International Arbitration, Zulficar & Partners Law Firm, and Member of the CRCICA Advisory Committee.
The event witnessed a diversity of participants from Egypt, Iraq, Palestine, Syria, and UAE. Attendees profile included representatives of: Arab embassies, Egyptian Society for International Law, Ministries of Justice and Education, law firms, Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution and Peacekeeping, GAFI, media and manufacturing sectors and universities.
