
76th Session UNCITRAL Working Group II (Dispute Settlement), Vienna

The CRCICA was represented by Mr. Xinghao Qi, Consultant for Promotion (East Asia) in the 76th session of the UNCITRAL Working Group II (Dispute Settlement) held in Vienna, from 10-14 October 2022. The topics of the session included early dismissal and preliminary determination and technology-related dispute resolution. The draft of a guidance text on early dismissal was discussed during the session with the focus on how and in what form it can be presented. A pre-arbitration process akin to adjudication or a form of fast-track arbitration was introduced. It was generally noted that the work should fulfill the demands of users and to offer them the possibility of a tailor-made process.
The session as attended and overseed by about 70 states and a number of intergovernmental and non-intergovernmental organizations includes the CRCICA.

KIAC 10th Anniversary Conference on the Impact of Institutional Arbitration in African Development, Kigali

On 29-30 September 2022, CRCICA’s Director, Dr. Ismail Selim represented CRCICA as a speaker at the 10th Anniversary of the Kigali International Arbitration Centre (KIAC), Kigali, Rwanda. The event was celebrated through the Conference on “The Impact of Institutional Arbitration in African Development – Celebrating the Delivery of Modern Case Management to the African Continent”. Dr. Selim alongside Prof. Emilia Onyema, Professor of International Commercial Law at SOAS University of London and Member of CRCICA’s Advisory Committee, spoke on the subject of “The Battle of Titans: Enforcing an Arbitral Award Set Aside at the Seat”. The presentation of Dr. Selim focused on CRCICA’s background, recognitions, advantages of arbitration under its rules and CRCICA’s contribution to promoting arbitration in Africa. CRCICA was a strategic partner of the KIAC 10th Anniversary Conference.

XXVth Congress of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA), Edinburgh

On 18-21 September 2022, Dr. Dalia Hussein, Deputy Director represented CRCICA at the XXVth Congress of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA). The event included 15 panels and approached interesting topics; inter alia, Three Classics Revisited &State Responsibility – Then and Now, Arbitration’s Printing Press: Drawing the Line Between Confidentiality and Transparency, Post Pandemic Dispute Resolution Toolbox and State of the World” in 2022 – New Developments and Reform in International Investment Arbitration.
Panel 8 titled “Asia, Africa and the Middle East: Dynamism and Consolidation” was moderated by Prof. Emilia Onyema, Professor of International Commercial Law at SOAS University of London and Member of CRCICA’s Advisory Committee, who focused on the need for action on meaningful steps to address the stubborn lack of progress on diversity.

Seminar on The Role of the State Council’s Judiciary in Supervising Arbitration Awards Related to State Contracts

On 7 September 2022, the Egypt Branch organized jointly with CRCICA a Seminar on The Role of the State Council’s Judiciary in Supervising Arbitration Awards Related to State Contracts, held at CRCICA (the seat of the Branch). The speaker was Counselor Monsef Nageeb Soliman, Former Vice-President of the State Council, and Lawyer and Arbitrator. The Moderator was Ambassador Mohamed Mostafa Kamal (MCIArb), Former Assistant Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lawyer and Arbitrator, and Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb).
The speaker focused on the role of the State Council and the State Council case law related to arbitration in state contracts; starting from the arbitration agreement and ending with the challenge of the arbitration awards.
