The Singapore Convention on Mediation: New Horizons for International Settlement Agreements

On Monday, 6 April 2026, the Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration launched its MediMonday Lecture Series with an inaugural lecture entitled “The Singapore Convention on Mediation: New Horizons for International Settlement Agreements.”

The lecture was delivered by Dr. Khaled Serry Siam, Assistant Professor at Ain Shams University and Former Chairman of the Egyptian Stock Exchange, and expertly moderated by Fatma Ibrahim, Mediation Consultant. The session brought together a distinguished audience of practitioners, legal professionals, and stakeholders interested in the evolving landscape of international dispute resolution.

The discussion provided a comprehensive exploration of the United Nations Convention on International Settlement Agreements Resulting from Mediation (2018), widely known as the Singapore Convention on Mediation, highlighting its transformative role in enhancing the enforceability of cross-border mediated settlement agreements.

Held on the occasion of the Arab Republic of Egypt’s accession to the Convention, the lecture underscored how this international instrument strengthens the credibility of mediation as an effective and reliable mechanism for resolving international commercial disputes. Particular focus was placed on the Convention’s scope of application, enforcement framework, procedural safeguards, and the practical challenges surrounding its implementation.

The session further reflected on the broader global shift toward consensual dispute resolution mechanisms and examined Egypt’s positioning within the evolving international mediation landscape following its accession to the Convention.

The event witnessed engaging discussions and valuable exchanges of perspectives, reaffirming CRCICA’s commitment to advancing dialogue and promoting the effective use of mediation and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms in the Arab region and beyond.

Through the MediMonday Lecture Series, CRCICA continues to provide a platform for high-level, practice-oriented discussions, bringing together leading voices to explore emerging trends and best practices in mediation and ADR.
