Live GAR Panel: Women in Arbitration

CRCICA represented at GAR Live Women in arbitration: perspectives from the Middle East

On 7 December, 2023, the GAR Live Women in Arbitration conference in Paris gathered legal experts to discuss the challenges and opportunities for women in arbitration across the Middle East. Among the distinguished panelists was Dr. Dalia Hussein, Deputy Director of CRCICA, who shared insights on navigating a legal career as a woman in the region.

Dr. Hussein highlighted the unique expectations placed on female practitioners, noting that while male lawyers openly discuss family commitments, women who do so often face career obstacles. She also emphasized the importance of mentorship and representation in advancing women’s roles in arbitration.

The discussion addressed gender biases, societal expectations, and broader diversity challenges in arbitration. Other panelists, namely Amani Khalifa, partner at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in Riyadh, and Sara Koleilat-Aranjo, partner at Morgan Lewis in Dubai, shared experiences of professional struggles and opportunities in the Middle East’s legal landscape.

GAR Live Women in Arbitration took place at the Shangri-La in Paris on 7 December and was chaired by Domitille Baizeau of Lalive and Yas Banifatemi of Gaillard Banifatemi Shelbaya Disputes. It was supported by headline sponsor AlixPartners, lunch sponsor Squire Patton Boggs, drinks reception sponsor Foley Hoag, gold sponsors DocketNavigator and 3 Verulam Buildings, and silver sponsors Pinsent Masons, Reed Smith and Twenty Essex.

CRCICA remains committed to promoting diversity and inclusion in international arbitration and proudly supports initiatives that empower women in the legal profession.
